After this series of tank battles near Sidi Rezegh, Operation Crusader lost impetus, and Rommel with his usual daring responded with a counteroffensive that targeted the rear areas of Eighth army. ("Ambush and "Onslaught", the last two scenarios in this abbreviated campaign are a foretaste of the DAK response). The British withstood the Desert Fox and managed to surround a large part of the DAK. These encircled forces managed to break out, and Rommel withdrew under pressure to his original position at El Agheila. Fighting would not be renewed until Rommel launched a new offensive in January 1942. The "Desert Rats" would continue to fight on in Italy, then France, and into Germany - arguably being one of the most Veteran formations of WWII.
